The main problem was the cleanliness. I found bugs in the bed, and there was a large hair on the bathroom tiles, so the room didn't feel properly cleaned or checked before we arrived. When I raised it with reception, they said Head Office would get in touch. The response felt dismissive, with no real urgency, reassurance or meaningful effort to sort it out. The bathroom also seems poorly laid out. The shower screen hits the sink, and when running a bath it looks like it could easily smash into it. That doesn't feel safe or thought through. I can appreciate the old-fashioned, quaint historic charm of The Red Lion in Colchester, where I stayed while visiting friends. But there's a difference between traditional character and poor upkeep. The building may have character, but cleanliness and guest care matter. Sadly, I wouldn't stay again.

My first stay here was good, but this second one was a very different experience. There was no heating or hot water, and I was freezing all night, especially with it probably around 2 degrees outside. The receptionist tried to help, but it was beyond his control, and the heaters he gave me barely warmed the room. I've contacted them repeatedly by email and phone about a refund or compensation, but they keep ignoring me.

I felt right at home in my gorgeous room and really didn't want to leave. The staff were lovely and ready to help with anything. I highly recommend this beautiful hotel.

The place is cosy, dog-friendly and good value. The receptionists we met were fantastic, explained everything and let us check in early. Just be aware it can get noisy: it's on the high street opposite some nightclubs, and they can get loud. I'd definitely recommend it if you don't mind that.
