The food, service and atmosphere at the Egerton Arms were fantastic. We started with drinks in the bar, then moved into the restaurant for Christmas Day lunch. We enjoyed it so much that we’ve already booked for next year. Well done, Egerton Arms!

We had a really enjoyable stay. The people were warm and friendly, and showed us to our room when we arrived. It was lovely, with a view over the beer garden, though getting there felt like a bit of a hike and the few stairs were steep. There’s plenty of parking on site, even though the car park was very busy when we arrived on Sunday. The Egerton Arms sits in a beautiful stretch of countryside in Astbury, opposite the church with its 2,000-year-old yew and fascinating gravestones. Congleton is close enough to walk to, either along the main road or, as we did, on a public footpath across farmland. We ate here both evenings and understood why the car park was so full. We’d planned on Sunday dinner, but the specials board had ox cheek, so we chose that and still got Yorkshire puds. The meat was perfectly cooked, with loads of rich gravy and vegetables. The next night, after walking around Congleton, we tried rag pudding, which neither of us had heard of before. It was delicious too. Prices felt reasonable for somewhere out in the countryside. We usually book bed and breakfast, so it was a shame they didn’t offer breakfast here. We knew that when we booked, though, and Glebe farm nearby has a cafe on site. We ate there one morning and really enjoyed it.

Sunday lunch was lovely. I asked for extra gravy, something that’s usually free elsewhere, and only found out on the bill that a very small pot had cost £2.50. Nobody mentioned the charge when I ordered. I spoke with the manager about it, but apparently that’s just how it is.

I like that you can walk all the way here from Congleton, with a pavement along the road. It’s also very dog-friendly. The pub has lovely outdoor seating, bedrooms above, and an historic church just a stone’s throw away. The staff have always welcomed me warmly at the door and looked after me well. There’s a great drinks selection, served quickly, and the food menu is really special. Today I only tried a couple of starters, but both were delicious, and there was a specials board as well. A very nice pub. Thanks to everyone there.

The Egerton is our favourite pub around Congleton. It’s got a warm feel and hearty food, so it works for a quick drink or a family meal. Everyone on staff has been friendly, helpful and professional whenever we’ve visited lately.
