Inside, the architecture is gorgeous and the walls are full of information about Donald Campbell. It's a dog-friendly 16th Century Inn in a perfect spot in Coniston, with a great beer selection. They're a CAMRA Good Beer Guide Pub, and have held that for multiple years. We didn't try the food, though the menu looked good. The Coniston Brewery Beer was really nice, and the barman was friendly and informative. Wow, what a place!

The garden views are spectacular, and the pub feels warm, homely and traditional. It's only a minute's walk from the main tourist area, so it's a well-kept secret. The staff are lovely and the food is delicious. Tonight we had Steak Pie and Fish Pie, both excellent, warming and filling after a chilly day out. It's a must do, but shhh, don't tell everyone!

We waited a while to order food and drinks because just one staff member was serving, after we stopped for a late lunch following a long walk. I ordered the Lancashire hot pot as a main, since it was listed under “Hearty lunches” and cost £20. The barman checked whether I meant it as a starter, but I was hungry and asked if I should get sides. He said the portions were good sized, so I didn't. The menu said it came with sourdough bread and Cumbrian butter, but there was no butter, even after I went back to mention it. The serving felt more like a starter than a hearty lunch, and I'm only five foot four and ten stone wet through. I told the barman what I thought. He said, “I apologise for the size of your appetite,” and did knock 20% off my second pint, which earned him some cartwheels from me. Still, it was very disappointing overall, and I probably wouldn't return.

We stayed one night after booking months ahead, and were later told the chef had left, so lunch and evening meals wouldn't be available. This may not reflect the usual experience, since it was a miserable, wet Sunday in November. The staff were friendly, but the place felt tired and empty. Our room was cold and not very clean, and breakfast was below par. It was a different visit from nine years ago, when I'd been impressed and rather spoilt while doing the Cumbria Way. I'd promised to bring my wife, so this was our chance.

The Sunday roast menu is really tasty, and the staff were so friendly. They made my 30th birthday feel special. It's in a great spot right in the middle of Coniston village.
