Royal Court Hotel

We went for two nights with relatives and, despite the mixed reviews, found it a really pleasant break. The rooms were roomy, modern and spotless, and the garden view was lovely. The reception, bar and dining spaces look great too. We hadn't known it was Crufts weekend, so there were lots of dogs around, but it didn't cause us any trouble even though we're not pet people. Staff were friendly and efficient, meals were plentiful and tasty, and both breakfast and dinner felt relaxed. Our food was hot from the self-service counter under heat lamps. I did hear someone say theirs wasn't hot enough, though I wondered if it had cooled while they went to get a drink. WiFi worked well in every room. Staff were happy to provide extra coffee from reception. It was very good value for the price, and we'd gladly return. Even with the hotel busy, it never felt crowded or hurried.

This could be a great hotel, but it needs updating. The bar had run out of several everyday drinks, and the vending machine only took coins. I had to drive over a mile to find a soft drink since I didn't have any coins. The room was better than on my previous visit, but it wasn't serviced during my three-night stay. When I asked reception for a towel, they only had small ones, and the one I was given was stained. Parking spaces aren't marked, so cars are parked inefficiently and the lot fills sooner. A few simple lines would help.

I expected some luxury, but the room had damp and we weren't even given clean towels today. Breakfast was cold, service was slow, and the egg I asked to have freshly cooked and flipped was in a terrible state. I was so frustrated I felt like throwing it back at the waitress. The £25 three-course dinner was dried-out fish and cold food, and breakfast cost another £25. For two nights, it wasn't worth what I paid. I wouldn't come back.

I mostly come for the spa and enjoy the steam room, jacuzzi and pool, along with the relaxed atmosphere. There's plenty of parking, and the staff are helpful and friendly. Cleanliness needs attention, though. There were puddles on the floor and the sauna seats need a proper wash. There doesn't seem to be drainage on the spa floor, so I'm concerned the puddles could make their way into the swimming pool. The facilities have a lot of potential, but please improve the hygiene.
