The old building has real character, and we all enjoyed our Christmas menu roast dinners on Boxing Day. The portions were generous, the food was good quality, and prices were competitive. There was a nice choice, and it came out quickly. Bar service was a little slower than usual, but nothing bad. I’d read the reviews and was a bit apprehensive about coming with my wife and parents, but our service was good and I have no complaints. Our young waitress, whose name I can’t remember, was pleasant, polite, and very helpful, even though she said she’d been working every day since the weekend before Christmas and was on through New Year’s Day. The long eyelash extensions are the one detail I remember about her. I don’t agree with the bad reviews I read. I’d eat here again. Give it a try for yourself, hopefully you won’t be disappointed. I wasn’t.

The hotel’s location is the one bright point. I came for a weekend stay on 28.2.26, having seen it had won “four in a bed,” but the room and breakfast were very poor. Only one ceiling bulb worked, there was just one toilet roll, the toilet/washroom bins hadn’t been emptied, and the washroom mirror wouldn’t light around its edge. I reported these at reception, but only the roll and light were dealt with. Doesn’t a maid use a checklist after a room is vacated, followed by another check? The washroom was covered in MOULD, as the attached photos show. At breakfast, the coffee cup had lipstick on the rim. All four of us asked for scrambled eggs without milk, but every serving came made with milk and swimming in some sort of grease. When our plates were collected, no one asked why all four portions were untouched. We’ve stayed at the White Lion three times. It seems the management has changed hands, and the quality across the hotel has become very poor. If you want a beautiful setting, it’s a big yes. If you want a clean room, it’s a very big no. Stay away.

Glad we found this pub. It has a great feel, with different rooms, stone floors, beamed rooms, and really comfortable chairs. The staff were friendly and welcoming. I overheard that the restaurant was fully booked, so it’s probably best to book if you want a meal.

After an afternoon at the Pantomine with the grandchildren, we stopped in for lunch. We were too early for the evening menu, but there was still loads to choose from. The portions were really big and the food was nicely presented. Our waitress GABBIE gave five-star service, very polite and attentive. We’ll definitely visit again.

We chose this hotel for a birthday celebration. The room looked lovely, with bottled water and a selection of tea and coffee, but the bin hadn’t been emptied, there were quite a few cobwebs, and the shower had mold. The restaurant had a wide range of dishes, though the vegetarian code hadn’t been added to the meals. The waitress thought that might be because the menu was fairly new. The cheeseboard was amazing, but nobody told us some items weren’t available until we’d ordered. Breakfast had the same problem. We only found out items were unavailable when breakfast arrived without them, and staff were chatting at the other end of the restaurant rather than checking on diners. When we got back to the room, our door card didn’t work. The cleaner said it had expired, so we had to go back to reception to reactivate it. It’s a shame, because the place has potential, but the staff seemed short on attention to detail and customer service. We’re still waiting for a manager to contact us about a more serious issue, and hadn’t even raised the points above. I watched Four in a Bed after getting home. It seems to have been filmed a while ago, because it didn’t reflect our experience.
