We ended up here after our original plans fell through, and what luck. The Downe Inn in Castleton is a real find. Even on a busy Sunday, the landlord made room for us to have lunch. It felt cosy as soon as we walked in, and the welcome was lovely. The beers were well kept, and their own Down Ale was smooth and easy to drink. The food was superb. Three of us had roasts, two pork and one beef, while the other had fish pie. Portions were generous, and every part of the meal seemed carefully made. The Yorkshires tasted fresh from the oven, and the gravy was rich and glossy. Our starters were just as good. We’d have ordered pudding too, but couldn’t fit it in. Next time! I’d recommend this pub without hesitation, and hope we can return soon.

I honestly think this is the best B&B Inn I’ve stayed in, and the first that’s made me want to write a review. The village is lovely, and the approach roads and Castleton show off the best of the Yorkshire dales. I booked a Sunday night in April 2026 to meet friends from America, and Johnathon sorted everything quickly over text. Carlos and the other staff welcomed us straight away, and our room, number 1, had amazing views. The room, bedding and towels were presented to a standard I’d say was above a normal B&B, and all were top quality. It’s a proper country pub, with a good drinks selection, clean and comfortable rooms, and postcard-perfect views from the rear Garden. Dinner was excellent in quality and presentation. I recommend the Korean chicken starter and the beef, Yorkshire pudding Sunday dinner. The Chef came out to check we were happy, and we were. A great night’s sleep and breakfast the next morning made for a perfect stay. Thanks to Johnathan and the whole team. Hope to visit again. Shahid (Shiddy)

We had a brilliant family meal at The Downe Arms on Good Friday. There were five of us, and the children loved the pasta, garlic bread and generous brownie desserts. The venison special was outstanding, full of flavour and beautifully cooked. The special fish pie and sirloin steak were just as pleasing. Everything we tried was top quality, and the whole menu looked tempting. You can tell there’s real care in the cooking. The staff were warm and welcoming, which made the evening even better. It’s rare to find both food and service this good. Shout out to Carlos and chef Steve, lovely to chat with people who are so passionate. Highly recommended.

We came in for a drink and ended up staying to eat. We’d expected basic pub food, so the meal was a very pleasant surprise. I wish I’d taken a photo of the fantastic fish and chips. I’d love to know how they made it so light and tasty, unlike the usual heavy version. My partner was delighted with his fish pie too, and the chocolate mouse raised the bar again. We stayed in a nearby cottage, so I can’t comment on the rooms, but the food is well worth going out of your way for. The staff were welcoming and friendly too. Thanks for making our rain-washed holiday that much better.

We’d been nervous after reading earlier reviews, but under the new ownership there was no need to worry. Jonny was a wonderful host, and Warwick was friendly and helpful behind the bar. They were still serving Sunday lunch when we arrived, so we had roast pork, which was delicious. Check-in was easy, our room was spotless, and breakfast was just what we needed before a day of walking. I’d happily recommend it for a stopover or a few cosy nights by the open fire.
