Bears Well Bed Breakfast

Breakfast was tasty, and Peter is a charming host. The bed was comfortable and the room quiet, but the accommodation was disappointing for the price. It needs updating: the curtains were faded, wires were trailing, and a lamp didn’t work. There were none of the extra touches I expected, not even water, tissues, biscuits or a bar of soap. The toiletries were said to be REN, but the shower gel came in a refilled, unlabelled little bottle, so it probably wasn’t REN. Cleaning was poor too, with black mould in and around the shower and dust left in cupboard corners. The website says Bear’s Well has been recommended as the best place to stay in Deal by the Michelin Guide, Condé Nast Traveller, Readers’ Digest and the Daily Mail. If that’s accurate, it must have been a very long time ago.

The location is ideal, just minutes from town and the waterfront. Peter and Nikki were amazing hosts, and the room was really comfortable. We had a lovely weekend and would stay here whenever we’re in Deal.

Deal itself was a peaceful, beautiful town, with countryside and lovely walks nearby and the Dover cliffs within easy walking distance. At the guest house, the hosts were friendly and interesting, the breakfasts were tasty and good quality, and the room was airy, spacious and clean. The bed was supremely comfortable, and the bathroom was large and luxurious. I’d happily stay again.

Peter had plenty of ideas for things to do nearby, and there were guidebooks and maps to browse while planning the day. Breakfast was lovely, with homemade plum and blueberry compote, cereals, and cooked options including a full English with local chipolata sausages, French toast, or smoked salmon with scrambled eggs. Our two rooms were comfortable and had the modern conveniences we needed, from hair dryers to toiletries. Complimentary water, tea, coffee and homemade shortbread were a nice extra. Peter was very welcoming, and Teddy was an absolute delight. We had a wonderful weekend in Deal at Bear's Well.
