The staff were really friendly, and having a nice pub attached was a plus. The communal rooms have a quaint, old-fashioned feel that suits the place. It’s also a handy short walk into town, and the price was reasonable next to the chain hotels. The bedroom furniture felt worn and mismatched, though, and the four-poster bed creaked a lot. The shower went cold after five minutes, and we had to keep the room shuttered and dark because tables and chairs were right outside.

All in all, a bad experience. The hotel itself was run down, with sticky tape holding some of the carpets in place, and my room door didn’t lock securely. I’d booked three nights for work through my company portal, with breakfast specifically included. The hotel said a booking company error meant it wasn’t included after all, and breakfast would cost an extra £15. Even then, service didn’t start until after 9, far too late when you have to get to work. Most hotels start around 6:30 or 7.

I was calling because we were worried about my friend, who had stayed there the night before. I’d dropped her off myself while she’d been drinking, to make sure she got safely to her room. When we still hadn’t heard from her the next day, I called to ask whether she was okay or if they could pass on a message asking her to contact us. I work in data privacy and understand the rules. I already had her details and wasn’t asking for anything confidential. The receptionist kept interrupting and shouting “data privacy!” at me, then suddenly hung up. A simple, polite explanation or a promise to try to get a message to her would have been enough. The way I was treated was rude and completely unnecessary. Hotels should show basic decency and care when someone is genuinely concerned about a guest. It was shocking and unprofessional, and I hope the hotel seriously reviews how front desk staff handle situations like this.

There’s an on-site brewery, so you can get proper cask ales. A good place to stay.

The adjoining restaurant’s food was amazing, and everyone working there was lovely and welcoming. The walls are covered with black and white photos of old actors and actresses, so you can have fun trying to name them all. I love the hotel’s lounge too, with its lovely furniture and all the old curios.
