Room 5 had its own doors straight out onto a private patio, with a garden beyond. The bed was the sort you sink into and forget the world, and the blackout curtains made it completely dark. I got up to use the bathroom in the night and couldn’t see a thing, exactly what I want for uninterrupted sleep. The modern, smart room also had Cow-themed artwork that gave it character without being overdone. We found The Cow Dalbury on Booking.com at a really good rate and decided on a night away. The stay felt high-quality, with thoughtful extras including a Nespresso machine, hair straighteners, Molton Brown toiletries, robes, a large smart TV, a mini fridge and a wonderful walk-in rain shower that felt like a spa. The only small drawback, which didn’t affect our stay, was that the building isn’t staffed overnight. Good to know, but it still felt safe and well set up. We had a lovely time and would happily return.

We paid a bit more than usual, but the food, service and atmosphere made it worthwhile. We brought our dog, so we ate in the cosy, comfortable bar area. It was a rare meal out with my wife, and we weren’t disappointed by the quality. The fish curry and the 'posh' fish and chips, served with the head on, were both tasty and a little different from the usual. Apple crumble and sticky toffee were good too.

An impromptu midweek dinner turned into a really enjoyable evening. We had a main course each, shared a cheeseboard and enjoyed some very nice wines. There was a small issue with one of the meals, but it was sorted to our satisfaction with minimal fuss.

We booked through Mr & Mrs Smith for a night away from the kids, and weren’t sure what to expect, given it was in the middle of nowhere. The room was great, the bed very comfortable, and the food excellent. For a night away and a meal, we couldn’t have asked for a nicer place. The staff were helpful and lovely, just what good hospitality should be.
