The Peppermill

We used Devizes as a base for a couple of days exploring Wiltshire, and it worked really well. The Peppermill is easy to recommend. Our room was spacious, clean and modern, with an excellent bed and a great shower with plenty of hot water. Those basics matter to me, and so many hotels get them wrong. We had dinner and breakfast in the restaurant. Breakfast was excellent, especially the Eggs Royale, which I recommend. Dinner was good quality too, and I really enjoyed the Ox Cheek. For two people, three courses and a good bottle of wine came to £130 before the tip.

The steak ciabatta was cooked perfectly, and all the food was delicious. We turned up on Saturday without booking and they found space for our group of three. There’s loads to choose from on the lunch menu, including hot meals and ciabattas, at really affordable prices. The staff were extremely friendly, and I loved our table overlooking the kitchen.

A great place to stay, right in the middle of town. The cooking is really good, the atmosphere is nice, and the service feels caring. They’re open to improving things too. Well worth what it costs.

We had pre-dinner drinks in the hotel’s pretty Courtyard before heading into the restaurant, where we liked the decor. There were four of us, each ordering a different main, and every dish was exceptionally good. I believe there’s a new French chef who’s only been there a couple of months, but they’re already making their mark. The two staff working Thursday evening were lovely and happy to help with anything. A super meal in great surroundings, fully recommended.
