Travelodge Doncaster Lakeside

I stayed for one night on Boxing Day and had no complaints. Room 111 was spotless and had a lake view. If you can, choose an odd-numbered room on the first floor for the view. There were enough facilities for the night, including tea and coffee, plenty of shower and hair wash products, and a small wall-mounted TV with lots of channels and a radio. There was no hairdryer. The rooms are disabled friendly, with lifts available, and reception is on the first floor. A Brewers Fayre pub, McDonald’s and a Subway takeaway are close by, and the shopping village is only minutes away.

This was our second stay. Reception were very welcoming, and we couldn’t fault the room. We paid £3 extra to choose a lakeside room and woke to a beautiful pink rainbow. Even a car park view wouldn’t be too bad for an overnight stay, since you’re not likely to spend much time looking out. If you have time, a wander by the lake is a must.

I’ve stayed at lots of Travelodges, and this is one of my favourites. The rooms have always been clean, cosy and comfortable, and we’ve had a great night’s sleep each time. Every staff member I’ve met has been friendly, helpful and easy to approach, a real credit to the company. You might get a lake view, or you can choose your room on the Travelodge website. The car park view can be good for people watching.

After arriving at midnight, I found reception shut. I called the supposedly 24/7 reception more than 15 times, and it went to voicemail every time. An employee eventually arrived at 12:25am and said he was on his own. Nobody being contactable like that is a serious visitor safety concern. After waiting 30 minutes, I did get a decent room. I’d like compensation for the wait and the lack of basic service.
