The Elgin Hotel

We'd stayed here once before, so knew what to expect for our second little break. It's an older hotel that could use some TLC, but it's fairly priced and you get what you pay for. That's not meant as a knock. Dinner was very good and reasonably priced, and breakfast was good too. The woman serving breakfast was lovely. The hotel manager never came out to greet us, which is disappointing in hospitality. Would we come back? Yes, for an affordable break with good food. It's not the Ritz, but I didn't pay for the Ritz.

A lovely little hotel near the river. Our rooms were clean, the staff friendly and the food reasonably priced. There was a wedding on during our stay, and it looked like a great spot for an intimate ceremony and reception. I'd recommend it if you need somewhere near Edinburgh.

The whole stay was awful. I was there with my child, and the owner was incredibly rude from the outset. Before booking, I'd called twice to discuss dietary needs and was told they wouldn't be a problem. At reception I offered to pick up supplies from the shop if needed, but the woman said no. Then at dinner the owner shouted at my five-year-old, calling her ridiculous about her food needs. It was upsetting. She was served dry potato with sweetcorn. At breakfast we got toast with blue-green mould on it. When checking out, the owner claimed we owed for juice when we didn't. Instead of admitting the mistake, he said he'd let me off this time. Embarrassing. I can't recommend this place.

The salad bar was a nice surprise, well arranged and with plenty to choose from. We stumbled across this hidden gem and had a lovely meal. The waiter was friendly, and they brought over a bottle of chilled water without us asking. Prices were very reasonable, there's a gluten free dessert option, and the view across the River Forth is great. Definitely recommend.
