The Stables at The Starr Inn

The furniture was ambitious, but in the end it still felt like a cheap place. We arrived in the evening and, because of the COVID restrictions, had to check ourselves in. If you needed anything, good luck. We couldn't find a TV remote or the free Wi-Fi password, which is usually somewhere in the lobby or room. While searching for the remote, we found one of the bed bars underneath, which gave us an idea of how comfortable the mattress was. We tried calling both available numbers but got no answer. Never again, I won't take a holiday break somewhere without a receptionist and end up frustrated.

Just 15 minutes from Stanstead, this place is a real gem and exceeded my expectations by miles. The staff greeted me warmly, and I parked in an undercover bay before being shown to my perfect room. It had everything I needed, including a great bed, lots of hanging space, a huge bathroom with a walk-in shower and a handy desk for working. There were thoughtful extras too: a flannel, soaps, shampoo, big fluffy towels, a DAB clock radio, a TV with internet access, tea, coffee, biscuits, drinking glasses and wine glasses. The Wi-Fi signal was strong. Just book it, you won't be disappointed.

The breakfast was a real highlight, especially if you’re hungry, and felt like superb value. My bedroom was delightful and very comfortable, and the staff were friendly and helpful.

The place was clean and well priced, and it did what I needed. Two rooms faced a busy, noisy road, though, and I was woken earlier than I wanted. I’d stay again, but would ask for a different room.
