Helen greeted us warmly at Reception when we arrived at Mackay's Rooms for a night a week ago. We had our two Yorkshire Terriers with us, which made the very comfortable room feel even cosier. We ordered drinks, and Helen brought them up to us. The vegetarian and vegan breakfasts were delicious and served very courteously. The location is great, with convenient parking just across the road. We’d happily stay again.

The breakfast was fantastic, though I would’ve loved an evening food service. Our room was really comfortable and nicely decorated. Staff were extremely friendly and accommodating, letting us keep our bikes on site and bringing an ice bucket, glasses and plates for the wine and cheese we had in the room. They also made a fuss of my partner, who turned 30 during our stay.

At breakfast, the special made with scrambled eggs was probably the best thing of its kind I’ve ever eaten. My room was luxurious, with a large bed and stylish bathroom. This was a truly exceptional B&B, with all the usual things you’d expect, plus a tin of useful leaflets with ideas for things to do and OS maps of the region for planning walks. Well worth visiting.

Breakfast was the best part, and the staff were very friendly, helpful and attentive, though things felt a little rushed. The rooms are nicely decorated, but the walls are extremely thin. We heard the neighbours talking, showering, using the toilet and having pillow talk. For £380 for 2 nights, I felt slightly robbed. We’ve stayed in all sorts of hotels and B&Bs, high end and lower end, and this felt expensive for what it was. The TV switches off on a timer, and after a power cut, the fire exit light came on and lit up our room at 11.30pm.

Fiona, the owner, was delightful and couldn’t do enough for us, and the staff were very helpful. The rooms were beautiful, warm and classy. A lot of thought has gone into fitting out the guesthouse, with high-quality fixtures and fittings. Breakfast was exceptional, with lots of homemade items.
