The Hawkhills

The grounds are the best part of Hawkhills. With rolling fields, woodland and open countryside in every direction, the roughly 240-acre estate feels quiet and far removed from everyday life. It's a lovely place for nature, long walks and slowing down. The rooms are functional rather than luxurious. Mine was comfortable, and the facilities seemed fairly new and well kept, though there were visible stains on the floor that made me wonder about deep cleaning. There was no mould or damp smell, and the room was fine to stay in. Meals varied, some were enjoyable and others less so. The pints were very reasonably priced at around £3. Facilities were practical and good overall, and I had a pleasant stay despite a few small flaws. It's a peaceful countryside retreat, and the setting alone makes Hawkhills worth a visit.

The room was clean and tidy, breakfast was good, parking felt secure, and the staff were very helpful, from reception through to the breakfast hosts. The location is lovely and so quiet, out in the middle of nowhere. The old main building is gorgeous and immaculate, though I was sent to the newer side building where the rooms are, and would have preferred to stay in the main one. One thing disturbed my nap: the bathroom extractor couldn't be switched off and seemed to be controlled centrally later in the day. Breakfast could use more choices for people who don't want a full English, maybe some fresh fruit.

The walks around the hotel were good, and there's a nice little gym. The people were lovely, the food was great, and my room was clean, comfortable and had everything I needed.

The common area was nice, with coffee machines and snacks, and there's a bar for drinks in the evening. The town is 25 minutes away, and taxis are pretty pricey. The place feels like a movie set, surrounded by nature and lovely for relaxing walks. Staff were friendly and always available, the rooms were clean and comfortable, and the food was delicious with plenty of variety. It also seems like a fantastic place for events, seminars, and personal, family or professional occasions.
