The Terrace Hotel

The place is dated, but that gives it some charm, and the location is great, just a short walk from the town centre. Breakfast isn't cooked, but you can choose up to 15 items per person from cereals, bars, smoothies and other small things on a tick sheet left downstairs the day before. They deliver your choices to the door each morning, and coffee is available downstairs. We liked our three-night stay and would happily come back.

The price was decent, the location good, and the architecture appealing, so the hotel did deliver on those points. But the booking website gave the impression there'd be a proper breakfast. Instead, you fill out a printed spreadsheet the day before and choose from cheap supermarket items, left in a sack outside your door at about 11PM. With no fridge in the room, milk and yoghurt sit out all night before breakfast. It wasn't a pleasant setup. Given the choice, I'd have rather they saved the money spent on it and I'd gone out for something proper in the morning. There are odd signs all over the place, which seem to make up for staff not being around. It's a pity, because with proper management and a refresh, this could be a wee gem. There's no elevator and no ground-floor rooms, so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who can't carry bags up a flight or two of stairs.

The building has lovely architecture and the staff were very friendly. Our room was near the top, with nice early morning views. We knew how breakfast worked beforehand, but still found the arrangement a bit odd, maybe a hangover from covid days. The location is great, and parking is free at certain times.

Great value, and the team were friendly and pleasant. The hotel is beautiful, spotlessly clean, with high ceilings and many original features still intact. Breakfast is a nice extra. There's no hot breakfast, but plenty of places nearby if that's what you want.
