Even with the heat, the staff were friendly. They helped my parents switch to a ground-floor room so they wouldn't have to stay in the 33-degree room under the roof. I might have given the hotel four stars at another time, but on our one-night bank holiday stay the heatwave made the shortcomings hard to ignore. The rooms were clean and well equipped, though tired, and the bathrooms are overdue for refurbishment. The beds were comfortable, and having a family room with four beds is a good option. There’s no air conditioning: one room upstairs was 33 degrees (91F), and ours on the ground floor was 27.5 degrees (81.5F), which I still found unacceptable. A fan was provided, but it only circulated the hot air and helped a little. Breakfast costs extra and is a packed continental option, which wasn’t worth the money. The pub next door is probably a better choice, or there’s a Toby Carvery five minutes away by car with a full English buffet at a great price. I also asked about the free bottle of water usually offered to BW gold members and was told they don’t offer it. It’s a small gesture, but would have meant a lot, especially with the rooms so hot.
