We were lucky to find this rural gem, especially after booking at the last minute. Joleyon and the dogs were wonderful hosts. Beyond the gate to Shoyswell, there’s a lush garden oasis, and three charming dogs come to greet you and show you around. We got to be guinea pigs for a high tea they may offer, with scones, cream and tea served in fine bone china. It was quite a hardship! Then Joleyon showed us to a room with a wonderful bed and shared excellent local dinner recommendations. A great place to stay.

The hosts were warm and welcoming, and the rooms were comfortable and really well designed. It’s a delightful, friendly place to stay and relax, with a large garden and small lake. I imagine it would be lovely any time of year, and it was reasonably priced too.

I’m writing this two and a half years later because Google prompted me to review the place. I’d honestly have avoided it, since that evening is among the worst memories of my life. The cottage itself is lovely and comfortable, though a little hard to find. We arrived in heavy rain and darkness, which didn’t help. You can see care in the details, and the garden pond and surrounding village are nice. My issue is that it’s advertised as “dog friendly.” To me, that should mean considering that dogs differ and some need more patience, as well as accepting their presence. Our dog isn’t friendly with other dogs after repeated trauma where he used to live. A few days before the trip, when the owner called to check we were still coming, I made sure to explain this. He assured me his two dogs would be kept away from ours. That didn’t happen. As we got out of the car in the dark, the smallest dog ran straight toward ours and took us completely by surprise. My dog reacted by attacking and injured it before I could put his muzzle on. We were shocked and felt out of place. Although we’d prepaid two nights, we stayed only one. The owners were understandably shocked too, but said we could stay that night if we wanted, since it was dark and raining. I found that an odd thing to say, as of course we would have stayed at least one night. My partner paid the full vet bill the next day, then we left. We never got back the money for the unused second night. That’s why I’d rate the place 2/5. The property itself would get at least 4/5 from me, but the experience overall was honestly a 0. It was deeply traumatic, and I felt the owners didn’t even try to refund the second night. I wouldn’t recommend staying here with a dog that isn’t friendly with other dogs.

The hosts are warm, helpful and easy to talk to, and the place has a cosy, clean feel with lovely decor. It’s quiet if you’re looking to get away from the city, and Ticehurst is a beautiful 35-45 minute walk if you don’t mind walking. Definitely check out the Bell. Beds are extremely comfortable, and the superior room’s deep soak tub is great after a day exploring. Breakfast is fresh and healthy, with fresh milk, local sausages, homemade break and jam. It’s served at a lovely table with lots of natural light from the windows. Such a great spot to relax and enjoy the beauty of the south of England, definitely worth a visit.

The rooms are beautifully furnished, and breakfast is delicious. We got the warmest welcome from perfect hosts in a stunning setting. I can’t recommend it enough.
