The City Gate Hotel

We’ll absolutely come back. The room had real charm, the food was excellent, and the staff as a whole were delightful, always ready to help with a smile. It’s an iconic pub with rooms and a lovely taste of British culture and history, especially for visitors from abroad. We didn’t expect to find one of the nicest walk-in showers we’ve used in England.

The staff made this a relaxing stay. Their customer service was fantastic, they were so accommodating, and no request felt too big. Breakfast was included, with a wonderful choice, and the rooms were clean and comfortable. Our room and en suite bathroom had been beautifully remodelled, with an old English feel and more modern touches. Tea, coffee and a selection of yummy treats in the room added a high-end feel. Downstairs, the old English pub was warm and inviting, while the sunroom where breakfast is served was bright and cheerful. Well worth the price. We’ll stay here again when we return to Exeter.

We chose the winter deal, which was a bargain: a double room with dinner and breakfast, both absolutely delicious. The roast was the best we’d had in a long time. Exeter centre is nearby, but you can’t hear any traffic. The room was lovely, with a huge bathroom, free tea, coffee and hot chocolate, homemade flapjack and a glass of port each. Such a nice touch. I’ve never seen a fridge and snack selection so well stocked, and there was plenty of choice to buy. It’s a friendly place, and the lovely Christmas decorations made us feel at home. Definitely recommend this little gem.

We’ll be back. The roast was stunning, and the pub had a fire going with mulled wine and cider at the bar. Everyone on staff was friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. Our room was clean, comfortable and modern. It’s a characterful pub with a lovely atmosphere and rooms in a handy central spot for shops, restaurants and the cathedral. The quay is a short walk away. Do yourself a favour and book City Gate instead of an ordinary chain.
