The Imperial Hotel

A family member of mine became seriously ill, so I had to cancel my booking. I know I’d chosen a non-refundable option, but I contacted the hotel hoping they might offer some goodwill, even a partial credit, as many places do in difficult circumstances. The refusal was blunt and felt lacking in empathy. I understand that policies exist for a reason, but a little compassion matters in hospitality. I hope management will respond more understandingly in future. For now, it’s a one-star experience from me.

If you enjoy a place with a bit of character, you’ll like this hotel. It has that slightly shabby Victorian or Edwardian seaside grandeur I love. The staff were fantastic, friendly and helpful, and the dining room is spectacular, with its double-height ceiling and chandeliers. Breakfast was good, with a hot buffet and fresh fruit for the continental choices. They even let us play the piano in the bar. Our sea view over the private hotel garden and promenade was fab. The room was clean, the bed very comfortable, and everything worked, including the shower, radiators and coffee machine. Some things need attention: the hall carpets were worn, and the relatively new windows in our room let in a draft. The staff told us renovation was coming, which is much needed. I’d love to go back and see what it brings. I hope they keep the character and the staff. If sleek modern style is your thing, this probably isn’t the place for you.

The gardens are large and good for dogs, though they aren’t secure except at the car park entrance. The location works well for the town and seafront, and the staff were lovely and helpful. Parking costs extra, as we were told, which is a shame. Our room was quite run-down, and it wasn’t cleaned during our three-night stay. The hotel feels dated and needs a makeover.

We’ve stayed here for many years because of the lovely location and the fact that it welcomes dogs. The shower is very nice, and I believe the rooms may be getting some attention soon, as they could use a bit of TLC. Breakfast was amazing, hot and with plenty of choice. The plates may be small, but you can always go back for more. The staff are lovely, friendly and very good at their jobs. We had a lovely stay and look forward to coming back.
