There’s a cat, which was a great bonus, and you can buy free-range eggs from the owner. The place is functional, but a lot of it feels well worn. The furniture was dusty and old, and the kitchen looked and felt greasy. We also found a snack-bar wrapper under our bed, so it’s hard to tell how thoroughly the rooms are cleaned between guests. The shared kitchen needs serious renovation, as do the bunk and private rooms. After that, I could see the prices going up by 15-25%. As things stand, I wouldn’t return.

Everything worked as it should, and the room was clean and comfortable. The whole stay went smoothly. A good place to stay, and I’d recommend it to other travellers.

Iain was a fantastic host and couldn’t do enough for us. He knows the local area and beyond really well, so ask him if you want advice on which hills to climb. The Bunkhouse sits in an idyllic spot and had everything we needed, including comfortable beds, hot showers, and a drying room. The shared kitchen was clean and well stocked, and the fresh eggs were a lovely bonus.

I booked three nights while planning to climb mountains nearby, but left after seeing how dirty the bunkhouse was. The shower screens had thick scum on them, and the trays had hair and black fungus. The communal kitchen was just as bad: a terrible smell came from the fridge, there were stains on the surfaces, and the drain was covered in green scum. The dry food boxes smelled and looked dirty, and the cooker needed a proper clean too. I packed my gear and left, but the owner wasn’t available. When I later complained, he didn’t take it seriously. I found a bed at the Ullapool Youth Hostel, which was spotlessly clean.

We had a brilliant couple of nights here and plan to come back for more hiking. I stayed two weeks ago with my dad and two brothers in a four-person bunk room. The beds were comfortable, and the shower was perfect after a long hike. There was plenty of room in the shared kitchen and dining area to cook and play a game in the evening, plus lots of outdoor seating for relaxing afterwards. The owner was very friendly and accommodating.
