Clayton Hotel Glasgow

I always enjoy staying here. The location is excellent, and the hotel is kept extremely clean and tidy. Staff are, as ever, really friendly and helpful. My only small gripe is that instructions for the heating and air conditioning would be useful. Still, a fabulous stay.

This was stay number two for us, and we’ll be back. The room was lovely, with a fantastic view, and it was ready well before check-in. We got a friendly welcome, and the beds were very comfortable. Tea, coffee, bottled water and biscuits were replenished every day. We ate in the bar too, where the food was delicious and reasonably priced.

Our planned relaxing two-night Valentine’s break was completely spoiled. We’ve stayed at the Clayton Hotel a few times before, but after this experience I’m not sure we’d return. Saturday was horrendous from the start. At breakfast, there was no orange juice, milk, coffee, bacon, sausages or black pudding. We arrived at 10.15 and told staff; after waiting 20 minutes with nothing appearing, we left. There was a queue, so it wasn’t just us. Housekeeping knocked while we were getting ready to go down, and said they’d come back. When we left, we asked reception to send someone up, but when we returned around 4 in the afternoon the room still hadn’t been done. Reception didn’t answer either of our calls. We went down to ask, then ran into the same room cleaner and asked him to sort it so we could shower before dinner. The room was eventually done, but there were no towels at all. Reception didn’t pick up at first, but answered the second time and sent someone with towels. Dinner was at 6. The menu was limited but fine. My husband’s steak, ordered medium, was fine; mine, which I’d asked to have well done, was pink right through the middle. The young woman we spoke to apologised, took it away, then came back to say a replacement would take 40 minutes. I’d had enough. I politely asked for the manager, but they weren’t there, so I spoke with the assistant manager. He was polite and listened to what had gone wrong all day. He took my steak off the bill and got my details to pass on the complaint. Looking back, the whole meal shouldn’t have been charged. I’m sure others will have complained about breakfast that morning too. No breakfast, chasing housekeeping, missing towels, then undercooked steak. It was meant to be a relaxing time away, and instead the day was a complete mess.

The room was clean, and the bedding was so cozy. Staff were amazing, helping us with our luggage and check-in, and suggesting places to eat. Even when we came back late at night, they were always welcoming. I’d absolutely stay at this hotel again and recommend it to friends.
