The hotel was extremely dark, and everywhere felt dusty and poorly maintained. My allergies flared up badly, which made the stay really uncomfortable. We were here on our honeymoon after a five-star hotel in Edinburgh, and the difference was huge. It was a major letdown for what should have been a special trip, and we couldn't wait to leave. The location was poor, cleanliness unacceptable, and basic amenities were missing. There wasn't even a mini fridge. The beds were advertised as king size, but clearly felt like doubles. When I asked about upgrading to a king, staff told me it was already a king and that they don't have double beds, which isn't right. I have a king at home and this was nowhere near the same size. booking.com even listed it as a double, despite the hotel's website calling it a king. Staff were dismissive and unhelpful when I raised concerns. They seemed more interested in charging extra for a super king upgrade, even though I'd already paid almost £100 more than the upgrade price advertised on their website. Noise was another problem: constant traffic outside, plus lots of drunk people shouting below our window at night. I'd asked for a quiet room, but couldn't relax or sleep. We couldn't order room service either. The QR code led to a site saying the hotel wasn't taking orders. Each of us got one complimentary bottle of water on arrival. Housekeeping threw mine away the next day even though there was some left, and no fresh water was provided on day two. They knew we were there for our honeymoon and made no effort to acknowledge it. Our previous hotel had greeted us with a complimentary bottle of Prosecco. We didn't expect it, but it showed thought and care, which was missing here. Anyone saying the Dakota is like a five-star hotel either hasn't stayed in one or has only stayed in very bad ones. I'd honestly rate this place three stars. The price was far too high for what we got. If I'd known, I'd have paid a little more for a nicer hotel. It felt more focused on taking money than giving guests a good experience. I wouldn't return or recommend it.

The cocktails at the bar were top notch, and the whole place feels like a lovely hideaway right in central Glasgow. Rooms are generous, comfortable and beautifully put together, with a quiet atmosphere and everything sparkling clean. I really noticed the care in the details throughout the hotel. Kseniia at reception deserves a special mention. She gave us such a warm welcome, was friendly and professional, and seemed to know what guests might need before they had to ask. That first impression really made a difference.

The staff are consistently attentive and professional, which makes this one of my regular places to meet friends for a cigar. Glasgow has a real gem here for cigar lovers: a quiet, comfortable terrace with outdoor heaters that keep you warm even on the coldest days. You can choose from their extensive in-house cigar menu or bring your own, and have food or a hot or cold drink alongside it. It’s the only proper spot I know in the city for enjoying a cigar.

We’ve stayed and eaten here a few times, but the service seems to have slipped over the years. For what it cost, I expected better. The room itself was clean and comfortable. The restaurant was the letdown: we booked an early table before a show, but waited an hour for the meal, and my steak came overcooked. Breakfast was slow too. Even after our main dishes arrived, we were still waiting for the coffee and toast, and had to remind the staff.

The staff are the highlight here, and the luxurious rooms have excellent linens. The lighting in the room is poorly designed, though, and on one of our four days the housekeeping was incompetent. It’s an expensive stay, and the TV was useless. The location is handy for restaurants, transport and shops, even if the window views aren’t much. There’s a gorgeous private park just up the block, especially in late spring. Glasgow, Scotland, a must.
