Native Glasgow

When family come down from Inverness, Native is the only hotel we book for them now. Mum really likes how much room there is, even in the studios, which feel bigger than most city centre hotel rooms. Dad likes to cook even when he's away, so the usable kitchens in the one and two bedroom apartments suit him well. They feel comfortable, like home. Highly recommend.

The hotel was good value, and we were even given a free drink in the downstairs bar. Our room was clean, had a lovely feel, and the staff were friendly. It also kept the noise out really well. Right in the middle of Glasgow, which made the location excellent. We'll be back.

We booked this serviced apartment for 20 nights, and a couple of staff members, Ian and another woman, were kind and helpful. But serious hygiene and maintenance problems kept coming up from just a few days after we arrived, even though we repeatedly raised them with staff. There was visible black mould in the shower. After we reported it, staff offered a room change, but all three other units we viewed had mould too. I have asthma and am immunocompromised, so this was especially worrying. I developed several rashes during the stay and took photos of them. Recent TripAdvisor reviews also mention mould in rooms. There was mould on a pillowcase as well. We were told replacement linen was limited, though eventually a new pillow was brought up. A bath towel supplied as clean had yellow streaks on it, which we photographed. The bed was so uncomfortable it felt like sleeping on the floor. The shower hose fitting broke while I was using it, cut my hand, and sent water spraying at high pressure onto the ceiling. We messaged the front desk on WhatsApp and got no reply. A handyman then arrived at our room without warning to replace it. The fire alarm was tested routinely, but it also went off unexpectedly several times, leaving everyone to come out of their rooms and work out what was happening. Before posting, we contacted Native management. They said they would get in touch with the location manager, but we heard nothing further at that point. The property did not meet reasonable expectations for hygiene, safety, or a long stay. Update 1: The on-site manager eventually emailed, dismissed most of the problems, and offered a one-night refund. I wrote again to explain how serious the issues were and was ignored. Update 2: I also posted this on TripAdvisor. In his response, on-site manager Joseph Barrie claimed we had been offered a free cancellation and a full refund for the unused nights. That never happened. Despite our repeated reports to staff, we heard nothing from him until after we had left. He also used the offered room change as a reason to dismiss our concerns, even though every room we were shown had black mould. Staff apologised and said they had recently hired a contractor who used the wrong grout in the showers, and that repairs would be scheduled. It seems that work happened after we left. Update 3: We asked Booking.com to investigate because we booked through them, and uploaded the evidence they requested. Booking.com emailed us several times to say the property refused to resolve the matter with them. They then gave us a $500 site credit. We're still waiting for the one-night refund the manager promised, though I doubt we'll receive it. From other reviews, it seems we aren't the first to have this experience.

The location made getting around easy. We took the bus to and from Glasgow airport, and its stop is a two-minute walk away. The Hop On/Hop Off bus stop is just as close, and Buchanan Street is around the corner. Staff kindly looked after our luggage when we arrived very early. Our suite was comfortable and very clean, with a little kitchenette and a large shower. There's a nice basement bar, and we enjoyed the nearby restaurants and bars too. We'd happily stay here again in Glasgow.
