The Belhaven

The room at the top of the building felt very worn. Paint was flaking and cracked in several places, the paintwork was poorly finished, several bulbs were out, and the window frames looked like they needed replacing. There was mould on the bath sealant, too. Even with the thermostat under your control, the room stayed very cold.

I couldn't sleep because I was worried someone might get in through the window, which had no lock. I left around 5am because I didn't feel safe travelling alone as a woman. The hotel's location was good, so I'd spent the day exploring, but coming back didn't feel safe. The room was very stuffy, so I opened the window that evening. It faced a courtyard, and I didn't feel comfortable leaving it open overnight. In the morning a staff member walked past, looked in, and stood outside vaping. The smoke came into my room, and I'm severely asthmatic. When I arrived, staff were smoking and chatting on the steps.

A nice room in a nice place, though it's a little way from the city centre. If you come back late, there's a code for the front door.

The staff were the highlight, really nice and helpful, and breakfast was plentiful and very good. We found this historic hotel for a family stay and thought it was convenient and reasonably priced. We were lucky to arrive on Saturday evening. Parking on the road was free from Saturday at 6pm until Monday at 6am, which made things easier.
