The hotel operates under a C1 Licence (Public Hotel), so I went in to ask whether they had rooms and when dinner was served. To my disbelief, it is now an asylum hotel. A man who said he was security asked me to leave but wouldn't show his SIA licence. Then a lassie working in the potwash racially abused me, saying English people weren't welcome and only refugees were. I couldn't believe the xenophobia.

You won't get a room here. It's a government immigration hotel. The people there seem nice, warm and well fed.

I've stayed here a few times, mainly because I liked the breakfast: an all-you-can-eat buffet with lots of choices. That's now changed to ordering breakfast, and the options have been cut back a lot. The prices and location compare well with other places. There's parking and a lift, plus a bar and nearby amenities, including a good shopping centre. My room wasn't great: the toilet barely flushed, there were stains on the ceiling, and the shower pressure was poor.

We got a great-priced deal for dinner, bed and breakfast. The hotel is being refurbished, so parts of it are tired and run down. Our room was okay. The first morning's breakfast left a lot to be desired, but there was a different chef on the next morning and it was lovely. Dinner in the downstairs bar was good, and our room deal included two menu courses. There wasn't much atmosphere to make us want to stay on, though. All in all, it was a fab offer. The quaint village is about a 10-minute walk away, with pubs, cobbled streets and a good atmosphere.

The outside of the hotel wasn't the prettiest, to me, but the reception area was a nice surprise. The receptionist gave me a warm welcome, and the man serving in the bar and restaurant downstairs, The Hidden Keg, was friendly too. My double room was just right, with the usual hotel amenities. The bed was lovely and soft, and they brought extra pillows without any fuss when I asked. I'd highly recommend The Bruce Hotel.
