The rooms were clean and the beds comfortable, and the location put me close to everything for my one-night stay. I’ve seen people mention the homeless shelter next door as a downside, but it didn’t affect me. I feel lucky to be able to afford food and a holiday. The flat itself was cold because only one radiator seemed to work, in the living room, so we left the bedroom doors open. The main bathroom bath tap was dead, and the shower handle came off in my hand. Only scalding hot water came out, so that shower was unusable unless you wanted third-degree burns. We all had to share the one en-suite shower.

The apartments are a good size, especially at this price, and the location is great. On our first night there was a serious fire next door, followed by a building evacuation and guests waiting for police to let them go back to bed. The duty manager handled a very difficult situation as well as anyone could. None of it was her fault, and it must have been even worse for her than for us.

There’s plenty of room and the Merchant City location is great, but the execution let the stay down. Given the price and setting, I’d expected more from The Spires. Several practical issues kept the apartment from feeling premium, and the experience ended up fairly ordinary.

The room was just as described and worked well for us. We had what we needed in the kitchen, the washer-dryer ran fine, and the shower was good. It’s downtown with bus stops all around. The area isn’t ideal, but we had no trouble since we made sure not to be out late at night.
