We had a pleasant stay. The Travelzoo deal made it for us, though I wouldn’t have liked the prices without it. On arrival, we had the cream tea included in the deal. Room 14 was small but fine for one night, and generally clean, except for one pillow with marks that might be stains that don’t come out in the wash. Dinner staff were great. My wife enjoyed the calamari starter, and we both liked the smash burgers, though I would have preferred more sauce. Breakfast was great too. They made something specific for me that wasn’t listed as a dish, and the breakfast lady was lovely, friendly and funny.

The beef baguette was cooked to order and worth the 20-minute wait. We both had one, and the chips were superb, crisp outside and fluffy inside. The manager was friendly and the staff efficient. I’ll be back soon. I used to come here for lunch in Gloucester and returned today after five years for a drink and snack. The period building and atmosphere were always lovely, but I was gobsmacked by the changes. It’s much roomier now than when it was small and cosy but needed some care. They’ve done a great job. The main lounge is super, as is the smaller room that used to be the bar. I didn’t stay at the hotel, but from what I saw in the dining area and photos, I’m sure it’s just as good. Highly recommended.

Our Travelzoo deal was £109 and included £50 dining credit, breakfast and a cream tea on arrival, so it was great value. The staff were really friendly and helpful, and we had a great stay. The room was comfortable, well equipped and warm, though a bit compact. The food was great. I had beer battered cod and chips, then bread and butter pudding, which was very nice but a small portion. Breakfast was superb, both the continental and full English. Probably the best scrambled eggs I’ve ever had. We’d definitely return.

The building’s quirkiness was a real pleasure, and although the rooms were small, they were very clean. Dinner was really poor, and breakfast was stingy. I ordered poached egg, bacon and sausages, expecting at least two sausages and two rashers of bacon, but got just one sausage. We asked for another for our dog and were told we shouldn’t feed him. Ten minutes later, we were offered one for £3. This was Christmas Eve morning, merry Christmas, chef!

Six of us had lunch here last Saturday. Every meal was spot on, the prices were good, and the service was great. The food was absolutely beautiful. I’ve already booked again for Valentine’s Day.
