The Sheppey

The Sheppey has a wonderfully distinctive interior, packed with memorabilia, and the outdoor seating above the river is fantastic, with wildlife all around. It’s a bit out of the way, but well worth finding. We were six people, and everyone’s food arrived together, nicely cooked and beautifully presented. I’d highly recommend it.

We came for a quiet break and the location was just right, in a little hamlet between Glastonbury and Wells, with country walks and nature reserves close by. RSPB Ham Wall, where you can see starling murmurations, Avalon Marshes, Shapwick Heath and Westhay Moor were all within a 15-minute drive. We had a lovely time and would definitely return. The bedroom was lovely, clean and well equipped, with pretty decor and a very comfortable bed. Although breakfast isn’t served there, the room fridge had fresh milk, orange juice, fruit, yoghurt and cereal, plus tea, coffee and biscuits, a thoughtful touch. It was great value too. We ate at the pub both nights and really enjoyed the tasty, nicely presented food.

The burgers were incredible, and those chips were hard to beat. We had lunch on the sunlit terrace with dub reggae playing, in a dreamy setting. The team were helpful, friendly and knew their stuff. There was a brilliant drinks selection, and the quirky decor made the place even more interesting. This was our first visit, and we’ll definitely be back when summer’s properly underway.

We were expecting a country pub, but inside it felt more like a quirky little museum of toys, posters and ornaments. The bar had a lovely feel and a great range of beers and ciders. There’s a gorgeous riverside seating area outside, as well as a wonderful dining room. Staff were fantastic, friendly and helpful. Absolutely a gem of a place, highly recommended.
