After a day walking nearby, we stopped in before catching the train home. The pub has a good selection of well-kept ales, as usual, and the service was friendly. The children’s meals came reasonably quickly, with nice-sized portions at a fair price. There’s outdoor seating at the front, where you can hear the stream. It’s a welcoming locals’ pub for visitors too. We’ll be back!

We only stopped for a quick drink, but what a lovely hidden gem of a pub. From the stone floors and atmosphere to the setting and views, it feels like the sort of village pub you used to find.

Our host went above and beyond when we got stuck trying to get back at night, which is why I give the Engine five stars. We’d booked for the Cartmel races and stayed one night. The room was a good size with a decent bed. It’s a beautiful old traditional English pub, with a cosy bar and a good choice of wines and beers. Sitting outside by the river was really peaceful. The outdoor area is lovely, and the prices are really good value. The pub itself is fairly standard, but it has an atmosphere that puts you at ease. Service is really good, and the staff are super friendly, sometimes cheeky too. You can book a space for a party at a very good price, provided everyone is buying drinks. Really recommend coming here!
