We booked ahead for four at 5.15 on a late Sunday roast, so we knew some things might have run out. There was only gammon left as a roast, but fish and chips, homemade steak pie and vegetable lasagne were still available. We went for three gammon roasts and a steak pie with mash. Everything arrived piping hot and there was plenty of it. The roast was so tasty, clearly made from scratch with care. It came with roast and mashed potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli, carrot and swede mash, a generous piece of gammon, a big Yorkshire pudding and very flavourful gravy that seemed to be made with the meat juices. The steak pie was excellent too, with big chunks of steak, gravy and a choice of potato and either the roast vegetables or peas. For dessert we could choose chocolate fudge cake, caramel apple pie or sticky toffee pudding, with cream, ice cream or custard. Two of us had custard and two had ice cream. The dessert wasn’t too sweet, and had a delicious caramel top. We all enjoyed the food, drinks and service. We’ll come back if we’re holidaying here again.

The staff were welcoming, efficient and really friendly to us and our dog. The drinks were good, and at £80 for four mains, two desserts and two rounds of drinks, the price was the one saving grace. Each round was a pint, a Coke and two halves. The food left me thinking about frozen food and microwaves the whole time. My mashed potato with the pie was so hot it nearly melted my face, as if it had been microwaved. My wife’s battered fish was mushy and watery, as though it had been deep-fried from frozen. The batter was barely 1mm thick and mushy too. The steak in my chunky pie was definitely chunky, but a little too firm, not tough, just not tender. Probably the wrong cut rather than poor cooking. Another person in our party and I both ordered caramel apple pie. His was hot, mine cold. I had mine with cream, which arrived lukewarm with bubbles in it. I think mine was microwaved first, then left sitting under the cream while the other pie was heated. Mine cooled while the cream warmed, and the bottom pastry went soggy. The rest of the pastry didn’t seem very crisp to start with either. I know times are hard and pubs can’t be expected to make everything from scratch, but there are three other pubs close by and this one doesn’t stand out from them for the food. It’s a nice place for a quiet drink, but I won’t return for a meal. I suppose you get what you pay for.

We booked over Easter and found a welcoming, dog-friendly pub with delicious food. The homemade steak pie was just incredible, definitely the best I’ve had.

Get here while these landlords are still around! The welcome, food and service are all lovely, and the place is completely dog friendly. The village will feel their loss when they leave to enjoy a well-deserved retirement. Could anyone else match the standards they’ve set?

The Sunday lunch was delicious, and the staff were welcoming and efficient. A lovely pub. If you’re staying at the nearby Haven site, you’d be much better off coming here to eat.
