We had the spring onion fritters and onglet with chips, and both were spot on. The wines by the glass were very good too, which isn’t always a given in a pub. For families, the kids’ menu is a big plus: proper food with plenty of choice, not an afterthought. We recently ate at The Royal Oak during a trip to Cartmel and had a really lovely meal. The team who previously ran The Clarence Tavern in Stoke Newington, one of London’s best pub restaurants, are now at the helm, and you can feel the difference straight away. The welcome was relaxed and warm, and the food was excellent. The menu feels fresh for the area, with thoughtful, interesting dishes using local, seasonal ingredients at very fair prices. It fits Cartmel’s food scene nicely, between the world-class cooking at L’Enclume and Rogan & Co and the more standard pub food elsewhere in the village. We’ll definitely be back.

We only meant to stop for a drink last night, but ended up staying for a three-course dinner. The staff were friendly, lovely and efficient, and the service was great. There are some unusual, delicious dishes on the menu, and we thoroughly enjoyed the evening. The new owners apparently took over fairly recently and seem to be doing a fab job. Thanks, and good luck with everything!

We loved our couple of nights here. The pub itself has a great atmosphere, and the beer garden is stunning. On Sunday there was live music, and the band was genuinely excellent. The food was delicious and the staff were friendly and helpful. Our room was clean, comfortable and beautifully decorated, with a particularly comfortable bed that gave us a great night’s sleep. We’d highly recommend a visit, even if you’re only coming to enjoy the pub. Thanks to everyone for such a lovely stay!

We went with my son, his partner and my sister for Easter dinner in Cartmel. I’ve always loved Tom and Demi’s hospitality in Kings Meaburn, and the welcome here shone through from the decor and staff right from the start. The wine list is unusual and well priced, and the starters are far from standard pub fare. The food is inventive, delicious and distinctive, with local ingredients and lovely combinations of textures and flavours. The homemade orange ice cream with homemade fennel biscuits was wonderful, as were the beef chips. The tempura spring onion fritters with homemade herb tahinini and harissa were exceptional, and the pork three ways was to die for. Even the steak came with a sauce and something described as “severance B4 serving,” which made for affinity. Everything was delicious and the ambience made it shine.

Back again for another great meal. The new owners have improved both the food and the pub itself, and the service is really friendly.
