The beer garden is a lovely place to sit in warmer weather, with views over Chepstow Castle. Inside, the pub has a cosy, homely feel and plenty of traditional countryside character. We always try to visit when we're in Chepstow. The food is consistently tasty, nicely presented and served in generous portions, so it's good value. There's a strong choice of locally brewed beers as well as other drinks, and the regular live music adds to the lively, friendly atmosphere. A great spot for a meal or a drink, whether you're visiting or local.

The food was edible, though not great. The beef on our sharing board was quite tough, while the cauliflower cheese was fantastic. The women who brought our meals were polite and friendly, and I can't fault them. But the man behind the bar made the visit unpleasant. When I asked about baby changing facilities, after we'd booked and been given a highchair for my one-year-old, he made a sarcastic remark about the pub's age and how they hadn't thought to include them when it was built. A straightforward no would have been enough. I've been to plenty of older buildings with a safe place to change a baby. When a family member asked what a cider tasted like, his answer made it clear he didn't know and seemed to imply the question was ridiculous. We also heard him respond sarcastically to a larger group asking about space, saying, "have you seen the size of this pub". That kind of attitude doesn't encourage people to come back. It put me off returning, and I'd discourage others in the area from visiting too. I've never encountered such poor manners from someone working in a pub.

The location was ideal, and I really enjoyed the rustic feel of the place. My room was a good size, clean and comfortable, with everything I needed. The bathroom was spotless too, with a great bath and all the essentials. Breakfast was fantastic, and the service was good, accommodating and trustworthy. If you're tall, mind the doorways. I'd absolutely recommend staying here.

The freshly cooked food is lovely and very good value. It's a characterful pub, and the staff are friendly and welcoming, with nothing too much trouble.

Free parking was a welcome extra. The pub downstairs and the room both had a rustic charm, with wooden beams, and the room made a great base for an overnight stay. The bar staff were all friendly, and breakfast was fantastic and plentiful.
