The Angel

We left the Angel a bit puzzled but still smiling. The coffee, tea, and Tcakes were all lovely, and they didn't charge extra for oat milk. It was a surreal, almost Norman Wisdom sort of experience, and I felt for the person serving. During the busy spell, there probably should have been two people behind the bar, but they kept smiling through the rush. We were three meeting in the morning. One person arrived first and had ordered coffee; the other two of us then ordered a coffee and tea with oat milk, followed by three toasted Tcakes. Getting them to us seemed impossible: after about four attempts, trays were laid for three, then two, then none, in different combinations. We paid cash but were overcharged according to the receipt, and the discount was twice offered as a card refund even though we'd paid cash. The Tcakes didn't arrive, so we asked if they were coming. Two were, and we had to ask again for the third. Later we ordered and paid for more coffee and tea. After 20 minutes one of us had to leave. They offered a refund, but there was no urgency or sense of an apology for forgetting us. We'd recommend the place unless you're in a hurry.

We had dinner at the Italian restaurant on Christmas Eve, and the service between courses was very slow. The food was a different story: the duck breast with cherry and port sauce, monk fish with tomato sauce, ginger sponge, and vegan ice cream were all delicious. The ice cream was the best vegan one I've ever had. At the B&B, breakfast was very tasty, especially the standout scrambled eggs. Our room was clean and comfortable, although the bed felt a bit small and soft for us, and the hair dryer needed upgrading. Noisy guests woke me several times.

The chicken pesto pizza was freshly cooked, a decent 10 inches, and fairly priced for the portion. A lovely pub with decent food, and an enjoyable meal.

The old building has sloping floors, and my room was comfortable, with antique-style furniture and a modern bathroom. The food and service were exceptionally good, and the staff were warm, welcoming, and excellent. I enjoyed my stay and would happily return.
