Harris Hotel

We only visited the hotel bar and restaurant, not as overnight guests. The building’s architecture and original interior design impressed us, with a classic grandeur, and the bar had plenty of charm. We ate in the garden room, which had a pleasant garden view. The food wasn’t bad, but the preparation felt dated. Frozen and steamed vegetables, for instance, seem like an approach that has largely been superseded. The flavours were muted, though not unpleasant. It felt as if the cooking hadn’t kept up with contemporary standards.

The restaurant was excellent, with a good range of Scottish whisky. The room was comfortable, though a bit small. The location is lovely, and you can walk into the village from here. It’s five minutes from the ferry.

We’ve had another fabulous week on Harris, and the hotel was very clean with exceptional staff. The room was small and had little storage. There was no shelf in the bathroom for toiletries, and the shower was poor, which brought that part of the stay down to three stars. Everything else was five star, especially the beautiful food each night. Compliments to the chef. Harris still enthralls us, and we’ll be back next year.

A haven on a wet day. From our first phone call until check out, everyone was friendly and helpful. The bedroom was warm, comfortable and excellent. The food was unbelievably good, from wonderful seafood to a superb breakfast, served by friendly, knowledgeable people.
