The oddest part of our stay at the Studley Hotel was room 140. I was there for a union conference in 2014, talking to my wife on my mobile while lying on the bed, when flashing orbs appeared above the curtain rail by the window. I heard a voice say, “Not now,” and the lights disappeared. I told my wife right away. The next day, I mentioned it to reception. The receptionist said others had reported ghostly experiences in that same room. Three months later, I was hiking with my family near Keswick, climbing Walla Crag in the Lake District. My daughter accidentally knocked loose a large rock, which rolled down the hill and nearly hit my head. My wife screamed my name, then, for no reason, said, “Not now.” We immediately connected it with what had happened at the hotel. Do you believe in ghosts? I loved the hotel, but that was a strange experience. Ll

The room was smart, spacious and clean, with a good sized TV, ironing gear and tea and coffee. The bathroom had a bath and a shower over it. The decor and modern finish gave the hotel a luxurious feel, and the staff were polite and attentive. It’s right in the city centre, so we could walk everywhere. My wife and I paid £119 for one night in an Executive room, plus £12 to park for the day. The bed was the one disappointment: it was advertised as king size, but was actually two singles pushed together. That’s usually fine, but I’d paid extra specifically for a king. At checkout, staff told me only Executive Superior rooms have proper king sized beds. Still, we had a pleasant stay.

The location was great, and the restaurant looked lovely. We only stayed one night. The room was a little old fashioned but very clean, the shower was great, and the staff were friendly and welcoming.

We slept well in a lovely bed, and the location was brilliant. The room itself was cold, though, and the shower flooded the bathroom quite alarmingly. Every footstep and slamming door from nearby rooms came through as if they were right beside the bed.

Perfect spot for town, and the room was clean. We had a four poster bed, but the duvet cover didn’t fit the duvet properly. The room felt dark, with rather dull decor. A couple of odd things happened too: a small plastic box slid off the dressing table by itself, and later, while my husband was in the bathroom, a shampoo bottle fell from the shelf onto the floor. We told reception, but they said there hadn’t been any previous reports.
