Sugar Boat

The Sugar boat has a lovely mix of cafe and restaurant, and the cafe welcomes dogs. The staff greet them with real enthusiasm, so bring your dog in for a break if you're visiting. The menus are great, with gluten-free bread available for sandwiches. My favourite lunch is soup with a sandwich. The menu has lots of variety, and although I haven't asked for changes myself, I've seen the chefs adapt most meals to suit particular needs. They also run themed evenings, DJ nights and tasting sessions throughout the year. I highly recommend the Sugar Boat.

I've been going to the Sugarboat since I moved to Helensburgh in May 2019. It used to be a favourite because it was welcoming, the food was delicious, and the attentive staff were always willing to go the extra mile, including with off-menu requests. But the service I got today, 07/04/26, was so poor that I won't be back. Management were unwilling to accommodate a simple request. We asked to swap two items from a £17 fry-up, worth £8 together, for one £3 item. They said substitutions weren't available and we'd have to pay extra. I've never run into that before, especially when the breakfast would cost less and all the items were already on the menu. There were six of us, so breakfast at £17 each plus drinks could easily have come to £150. We left and ate elsewhere, where they changed an unwanted item without any fuss, for half the price too. Such a shame after having loved this place.

I've only tried breakfast so far, and the food was lovely, the coffee nice, and the wait staff pleasant. Service is good, especially when it's quiet. I noticed they have themed evenings, Spanish and so on. It seems best to book for dinner.

We had loads of room for our family of four in the family room, and the beds were really comfortable. The room was lovely, and the location is ideal too. We stayed last night and had a great night. I can't recommend it enough, and we'll be back!
