Castle House

The location makes it easy to get around, with lovely walks through the city, the cathedral just a stone’s throw away, and restaurants, bars and shops all within walking distance. Staff were extremely welcoming and friendly, and did their best to help with requests. The rooms were exceptional. I was lucky to get parking three minutes around the side, as it’s first come, first served. Breakfast had everything I wanted. I had the traditional, a good-sized portion that tasted great, with brown sauce for good measure. The bar is well stocked with a great range of drinks, and the hotel’s space worked well for a drinks function too. The bar kept moving.

We’ve stayed here several times over the past 12 years, and it’s never disappointed. The standards of food, service, accommodation, cleanliness and friendliness have held up on every visit. This time we had Sunday lunch, stayed overnight and had breakfast, and we were delighted with the offer. Lunch was delicious and generous, with great choices for each course. Castle House is close to the Cathedral, city centre and Bishop’s Gardens. There’s a small private car park, plus on-street parking around the front. It’s more than worth a visit, it’s a must.

We’d definitely stay at Castle House Hotel Hereford again. We came for a weekend, and the price was very reasonable. There’s a small car park less than a two-minute walk away. Its entrance is narrow and tight, but the parking was useful for a trip to the town centre. The main shopping centre is about a 15-minute walk, with quaint shops along the way. There are plenty of places to eat in the centre, though I’d recommend booking some of them, especially on a weekend. Staff were very nice and helpful, and our room was spacious enough for two, with a view of the front street. It was a little cold, as the radiators were in the sitting area and there weren’t any in the bedroom. Breakfast was nice. I had a waffle with yogurt and caramelised banana and rooibos tea, while my husband had two eggs on toast and coffee. The restaurant stayed quiet until 9am.

We were very disappointed. It wasn’t how we remembered it. We were seated in a very noisy annex instead of the more refined dining area. The beef was overcooked and rubbery, the plates were cold and the food went cold quickly too. The vegetables were very good. Staff were friendly and helpful, but a bit disorganised. The young man at the bar had a dirty, creased shirt. After we’d had our prosecco and ordered red wine, pointing to the number on the menu, we were bizarrely asked if we wanted a glass or a bottle. There were four of us. Sorry, you’ve lost us.
