We tried a couple of the walks in the hotel’s book, put together by a local enthusiast, and both were varied routes with spot-on directions. They start and finish at the hotel, which was handy. Coming back to good food and beer was a bonus. We had a lovely two-night stay, with a spotless, homely room and staff who were helpful and friendly throughout.

We stayed for a night to explore the area and have a few drinks in holmfirth, then ended up having Sunday dinner at the hotel. It was delicious, and everything felt just right. The room was clean, full of character, and had a fantastic bath. Breakfast downstairs in the pub was just as good, with a tasty fry-up made from high-quality ingredients. Staff were friendly and helpful from start to finish. Can’t wait to return.

After a hike nearby, we stopped in for lunch. Good pub grub in a contemporary setting, and the staff were friendly and efficient. They still took our order even though we were a minute past the last food orders.

The location is great, and there’s outdoor seating, but a bitter manager ruins it. He tells staff off in front of customers, then sits at a desk all day just saying hello and goodbye. The atmosphere is awful, the beer is poorly kept, and the average pub food is priced as if a chef had prepared it. It’s expensive and has ideas above its station. Get a decent landlord who works and knows how to pour a good pint.

We found the Pickled Pheasant on Google Maps and booked one night with breakfast while meeting family friends in Holmfirth. We were warmly welcomed and shown to the Partridge room. It was modern and spacious, with a comfortable bed and a spotless bathroom. The shower was great, and there were nice touches like complimentary bottled water and a kettle with tea and coffee. After a good night’s sleep, we had an excellent cooked-to-order breakfast before heading home. The staff looked after us well and nothing was too much trouble. I’d highly recommend it for a bed and breakfast stay. We didn’t have dinner there, though the restaurant was busy when we arrived on Sunday afternoon and the food looked good.
