We booked a birthday meal and I was looking forward to a rib eye steak. I hadn't realised I would have to cook it myself. I can't cook and won't cook, which is why I go out! Instead, I had a tip-top deep fried chicken burger with bacon and cheese, plus fries and coleslaw. We were there on a Friday night in the Vinyl room, where a group of young people were having an absolute ball. Their chatter and singing made the evening. I was glad we went for my 67th birthday, and it's great to see young people with such a good place to go.

We pulled in while driving through and stopped at the first place to eat. The exterior and inside weren't much to look at, but the food was excellent. We had mushroom soup, a baked potato, omelets and a pizza. All were tasty and well cooked, with decent prices. Don't let the appearance put you off. The staff are great and the food is top-notch.

There's a good range of vegetarian dishes, and the food was good. The bangers and mash looked amazing for anyone who eats meat. It's a solid place to stay in a picturesque town, provided steep stairs aren't a problem. The car park in the square is free overnight if you move your car by 8am. There's another nearby, The Manor, which costs 5 pounds a day and can apparently be paid for after 6pm the night before, or costs 1.20 an hour.

The rooms are basic, but suited us fine since we only needed somewhere to shower and sleep. We enjoyed Sunday lunch, though the roast potatoes were a bit hard on the outside. The garlic potatoes were lovely, and Hot Rock steak is a brilliant idea.

I've only stopped in for food and a drink, but the lunchtime menu has good choices.
