We arrived close to midnight and found the cottage filled with a strong damp smell and woodlice everywhere. They were in the living area, bedroom around the bed, bathroom and kitchen. The video shows only the living room. There was wood dust all over the settee, apparently from ceiling beams that were falling apart. We called the host for advice and help, but the only offer was that a cleaner might come the next day. That wouldn’t have dealt with what seemed to need damp and mould specialists and pest control. The place didn’t feel safe to stay in, and we thought we might have to sleep in the car. We left at midnight and had to find somewhere else, eventually getting accommodation six miles from where we needed to be because options were limited at that hour. It cost us an extra £519, plus more fuel. Booking.com said a refund was the responsibility of the vendor, Host and Stay, while the vendor sent us back to Booking.com. We went round that loop three times. The vendor did acknowledge that the property hadn’t been cleaned for two weeks, which is unacceptable care and still doesn’t explain how run down it was. We’ve had no way forward except to seek a refund through our bank. Don’t stay here or use Booking.com or Host & Stay. The positive reviews I saw were from a year earlier, perhaps before the damp set in and the woodlice moved in.

The cottage looked lovely in the listing, but seeing it in person was even better. It’s quaint, with modern furnishings, and has a wood burner that’s perfect for settling down with a glass of red. The shower was the best either of us has ever had. My partner and I love climbing and wild swimming around the Peak District, so we already knew it was ideally placed for an adventurous weekend. We had a great stay and will definitely come back.
Calver was such a lovely village, with friendly, warm and welcoming people. The cottage is cute, quirky and compact, but very comfortable, and it’s detached, with a log burner that was just what my partner and I needed after long days. Our small dog was welcome too. It’s almost too well equipped, with everything you need and more. The location made it easy to get around the area. There are lots of walks nearby, including Curbar Edge and Baslow Edge, and so many food choices. We liked the local Spar, and the Calver Arms was a great find. Drinks were a little dear, but that’s to be expected. We had a sensational stay at Foxglove Cottage and will miss it. Thank you.
The cottage layout is so well thought out, with literally everything we could wish for. It was just right for the two of us, and we had a lovely weekend. The location worked perfectly for Chatsworth House and the Christmas markets. We’d planned a walk, but the weather had other ideas, so we made the most of the local pubs instead. They were all fab. Back at the cottage, lighting the fire was a cosy end to a brilliant day. We finished with a wonderful evening meal at The Derwentwater Arms, where the food was highly recommendable. We’ll definitely be back! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
The cottage was spotless and had everything we could need. It’s truly beautiful, and the decor was lovely.
