The Castle Hotel

We went in for a Sunday roast and would happily return. The food was really nice and well presented, and the service was prompt. The staff were welcoming, and the tidy pub and lovely area made it a pleasant visit. I’d recommend it.

I stopped in on a soggy Saturday lunchtime for a snack and ended up having the best chunky chips I’ve ever had. I usually go for skinny fries, but these double-fried ones were perfectly crispy and fluffy in the middle. The homemade bread pudding was amazing too. I’ve called in a few times lately because the real ales change regularly and are in excellent condition. I’m definitely going back for Sunday lunch before Christmas.

The lack of care here was shocking. It was freezing, there was no heat in our rooms, and nobody answered when we called the emergency number. There were no staff on duty, and the next day brought no apology. My emails have also gone unanswered. Someone in our group was immunocompromised and suffered horribly with the CD all night. I’ll never stay here again.

I went over for a drink with my daughter and son-in-law at 7:25 pm on Sunday 21st Dec. We were told they were closing at 7:30 and could be served only if we finished our drinks in five minutes. Several other customers were there too, and clearly wouldn’t be finished by closing time. If the new owners are trying to bring in business, I fear for The Castle’s future. I’ve rarely felt so unwelcome in a pub. Extremely disappointing, and I won’t be back.
