York Hotel

I usually don’t leave reviews, but that stay was so traumatic I felt I had to say something. I’d paid for four nights and left after two, even though the booking was non-refundable. I’d rather lose the money than spend another night there. The smell was awful throughout, from the toilets and kitchen to the carpets and corridors. For a hotel that size, having just one cleaner seems nowhere near enough. I’d expect at least four people doing housekeeping and cleaning. Worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in. I wish I could give it zero stars.

The website photo gives a misleading impression. The room was in poor shape, with broken furniture, curtain rods that needed fixing, a bad mattress, and dirty carpets. It all smelled and looked dirty. I was concerned I might catch something by staying there, so after seeing the room I decided not to stay and went to book somewhere better. I’d avoid this hotel like the plague.

When I arrived to check in, they said they had no rooms and couldn’t find my reservation, even though I’d booked ten days earlier and had a confirmation from the hotel. They said another staff member had made the booking and apparently didn’t know about it. After a long discussion, they found me a place at a different hotel. The whole thing was really disappointing.

The room still wasn’t available, despite having booked it weeks ahead. Reception was slow and frustrating from the moment I arrived, and paying the deposit in cash only seemed ridiculous for the capital. The service was shocking, and it carried on at the other accommodation they sent me to. I’ve never had a worse hotel experience, including places where I actually stayed. You usually get what you pay for, but somehow this was worse. Avoid it at all costs.
