Emma and I had a fabulous anniversary stay at The Cow and Calf. The old-fashioned hotel and pub is decorated and designed superbly, but the staff made us feel warm, cosy and welcome. Charlotte, Izzie, Isaac, Ellie and Nick all went above and beyond. Nothing was too much trouble, and we’ll definitely return for them as much as for anything else. A huge well done to the team. The food was fantastic, delicious and well presented, with good portions and empty plates all round. Breakfast was superb and filling enough that we only needed a snack for lunch. The online information says the building became a private residence called Highfield House in 1873, then a boarding house in 1949. Look out for the views across Wharfedale and the old Victorian well in the grounds. The menus feature hearty favourites, country pub classics and seasonal dishes, with cask ales, wines and British gin, to enjoy in the gardens or by the log fires. Five big stars from us.

On the way to Northumberland, I had a lovely stay here with my dog. They provided a bowl, biscuits and a little blanket for the dog, a brilliant touch. The surroundings were lovely too, and we walked on ilkley moor. Thank you!

It’s our third visit, this time for our birthdays on 18 & 19 January, and we booked dinner for both nights. The food was top notch, the bar was beautifully furnished and decorated, and the staff were efficient and friendly. Our room was lovely and spotless, with a nice bathroom, large shower, comfortable bed and good quality linen. The lighting was excellent, and the USB sockets were appreciated. A place for folded clothes would help, as the shelves under the hanging rail are quite narrow. I have mobility issues and really struggled with the stairs. I’d suggest adding handrails on the sections that only have one side. Otherwise, a wonderful trip. Thank you.

My fiancée said The Cow and Calf was easily the best hotel or pub she’d stayed in. The staff were attentive, kind and friendly, and the managers always acknowledged us when passing. The chef’s food was amazing, and the rooms were clean and fresh. We had a great stay and will be back very soon. Thank you!

All the staff we met were friendly and very helpful, and we had a great stay. The room was spacious and big, with lovely views and a really comfortable bed. Dinner was fantastic in a lovely restaurant setting, and we couldn’t fault anything.
