We were at The Crown at 6pm with our two young children. The first hour was really enjoyable, with attentive, welcoming staff while the restaurant was still fairly quiet. As it got busier, the service noticeably dropped off. My husband and I ordered the £90 chateaubriand. It was cooked perfectly and tasted lovely, but the value didn't feel right for the price. There was only a small dish of greens and six chips between us, three each. After the mains, we asked for dessert, then waited more than 20 minutes with nobody checking whether we needed drinks, were still waiting, or wanted the bill. In the end, we had to get someone's attention ourselves. We left at 8pm feeling let down, especially after such a good first hour. The manager did take our drinks off the bill when we explained our disappointment. The £20+ service charge was still on there at first, though, and we had to ask for it to be removed too because of the lack of service towards the end. The food quality was there, and it could have been a great evening, but the inconsistent service affected the whole experience.

The food was excellent, especially the quail scotch eggs and Sunday roast beef, and breakfast the next morning was just as delicious, made with good-quality ingredients. We stayed on Sunday with our dog in a spacious room with a huge, comfortable four-poster bed. All the staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. We'll definitely go back.

The evening meal was really, really good, and the service was excellent. The dining room is lovely, with the old-fashioned feel you'd expect, and breakfast was great too, served efficiently. Check-in was lovely, the rooms were clean, comfortable and warm, and the staff were great. They had no problem with us arriving an hour early. The afternoon bar visit was OK, but some loud, shouty gents in one bar and unruly screaming kids in the other took away from it. It wasn't the hotel's fault, but it happened. Then at dinner, a loud nearby table of drunken people showing off spoiled the meal for us and other tables too.

A beautiful building in a lovely location. The rooms were very clean and comfortable, with all the amenities. The food was stunning, and everyone on the team was friendly and helpful, from reception to the bar and housekeeping. I'd definitely stay again.

The atmosphere and staff were great, and they had some good IPA and low-alcohol lager. We stopped by on Friday night for pre-wedding drinks and had a lovely time. Thanks!
