The Isle of Skye Guest House was handy enough for visiting some sights around the island, and self check-in was straightforward. The rooms were small and basic, though. More than anything, the place felt unwelcoming. The lobby, sitting room and big dining room have large windows looking out to the lawn and trees, and could have been lively spaces to meet people. Instead, they felt cold and sterile, with chairs crowded into the huge rooms and little reason for guests to talk to one another. Breakfast was a stack of cold cereal boxes and a small fridge with milk and yogurt. There was a single hot pot for water for tea, instant coffee and hot chocolate, and it always seemed empty. On our first morning, we found no coffee or water and nobody around to ask. I called the number they provided and was told I had to refill the pot myself. When I asked where the sink was, and whether I should take it to our room to fill in the bathroom, the woman said to look under the table, hidden by a long cloth, for bottles of water, then boil water for everyone. Really? At the very least, there should be a note explaining where the water is. This guest house didn’t feel like it catered to its guests. It left us and others with a bad feeling.
The room was absolutely gorgeous, and it was a good place to stay. We did have a bit of a struggle with self check-in, and breakfast was disappointing, just some yogurt, cereal and tea or coffee, so we went out to eat instead.
We booked two rooms for four people and were placed in separate buildings. Now they say we should have asked to be together, though that seems like the obvious arrangement. One room had a dead spider on a chair. In the other, the shower had a bar of soap that had already been opened and used. The sheets and carpet both smelled moldy. Music in the hall played all night and made it hard to sleep. When we did get to sleep, the cheap breakfast woke us up. There’s nowhere to put clean clothes while showering, so you have to leave them on the toilet. There was nobody there to help. When we tried to tell them how disappointed we were, the next message we got was automatic and asked us to leave a review. For what it costs, guests should be treated WAY better.
The room was basic at best, and it felt very expensive for what you get. There are only a few restaurants within walking distance, and their hours were limited, so we ended up eating from a food truck. I gave the service two stars, though really you never have any contact with the staff. My main issue behind the three-star rating was being advised not to drink the water. At almost $350.00 a night, you’d think it would at least be safe.
The breakfast was awful. There was no milk, yogurt or bread, so the only options were jam or dry cereal. The room heaters didn’t work either.
