We were so impressed with our first meal at The Whestsheaf that we went back for a Sunday roast while on holiday in Brigsteer last week. The roast didn’t disappoint, and I’d call it one of the best pub roasts ever. The cheese soufflé starter was to die for, too. The first time, we shared the beef and Guinness pie, which was delicious. The food quality was outstanding, and the service was friendly and efficient.

They fit us in at short notice and handled several allergies. The staff were really friendly, the portions massive and the food lovely. Couldn’t fault it, we’ll definitely be back.

The service was attentive, there was a great drinks selection, and the room worked perfectly for our group. The Sunday lunch was one of the best I’ve had in recent memory. The beef was pink and tender, while the belly pork was mouthwatering and succulent. Both came with a tasty Yorkshire pudding and fresh vegetables. The roast potatoes were crisp on the outside, fluffy inside and delicious, and the gravy was rich and meaty. Do visit, you won’t regret it.

We come for lunch regularly and have eaten here in the evenings four or five times over the last few months. The staff are always welcoming and happy to help. The food is thoroughly wonderful. At lunch, my wife and I have loved the folded flatbread sandwiches, with such flavourful, inventive combinations that they’d fit right in at a street food spot in a major city. This evening, someone in our party ordered fish and chips. I’d never tried it here before, and the cod was giant, wrapped in golden batter, with homemade chips that were crisp and glassy. The person who ordered it, well into his 70s, said halfway through that it was among the best fish and chips he’d ever had. I had the burger again, just like last week: a perfectly cooked, moist, thin double patty in a soft yet textured brioche bun, with glazed onions and pickled gherkins. Every bite was a dream. And the dark chocolate mousse dessert? Just wow. I could eat it all night. They had two great Robinson beers on cask tonight and regularly keep them in great condition. My only possible quibble is the range, as I’d love to see a few rotating guest casks too, though I know not everyone drinks cask ale. Edit: sadly, the tenants and chefs have left and someone else is running the place now. I can’t comment on the new management, but I wish them well.

The staff were lovely, and the place itself is pretty. But the Sunday roast was bland and forgettable, with barely any flavour. £32 is a lot to pay for food like that. For that price, I expected something spectacular. I'd look elsewhere.
