We were left upset and scrambling for another place, since there was almost no accommodation available. I know Keswick well from coming here with friends every autumn for walking, and this year I brought my wife for a weekend in the lovely Cumbrian town. The room was spotless and the en-suite had everything it needed, but it was tiny, and my wife’s claustrophobia made her panic. We’d paid £240 for two nights. I understand the rules meant I was responsible for the full amount, but the owners were very keen to get the key back and take another card’s details in case the first payment failed. That felt distasteful. It seemed demand was well above availability, and they’d doubled their money. I think the rooms are overpriced; some of the fabulous guest houses and B&Bs have much better rooms for better value. I’ll plan ahead next time and we’ll give it another try.

Right in central Keswick, so the location’s perfect. Our room was clean, a good size and well priced. The only drawback was that WiFi didn’t reach our room, though it was available in the restaurant.

We found a little gem in the downstairs bar on our third day, though it could have been advertised better. It was fully stocked, and the bartender was really friendly. We had lunch there, and the food was just as good as breakfast. Breakfast itself was excellent, made with good quality ingredients, and the young waiter was professional, friendly, and happy to help guests. We stayed four nights for our anniversary; the room was very comfortable and clean. We’ll definitely book again soon.

We stopped in for dinner and had a really good meal at a reasonable price. The restaurant has a lovely feel and tasteful decor. We started with goats cheese and salad, then had sausages and mash and a burger. The mains were so generous we could’ve skipped the starter. The burger was faultless, with a crispy ciabatta-style roll and loads of flavour. Sausage and mash was great too, with tasty onion gravy and perfectly cooked vegetables. Simple food done well.

The Cumberland pie was delicious, and I’d never seen it on a menu at another local pub. It came with spicy potatoes, which were lovely too, though with potato on top of the pie there was a lot of it in the meal. My girlfriend had pork steak with apple and cheese sauce, and it was so good I had to steal a bit. There’s a nice wine selection and a good range of menu choices. Service was quick, the staff friendly, and the atmosphere cosy. I’d definitely go back.
