Catherine even packed lunches for my son and me to take on our hikes, and breakfast was delicious with plenty to eat. After dinner we’d come back to the beautiful lounge, pour some wine or tea, and play Scrabble and Rummikub. Our rooms were fresh and comfortable, and I loved having my own kettle and biscuits. I’d travelled alone from the USA to visit my son at uni, and we’d planned to meet in Keswick for a couple of days of hiking. After a long journey and some travel nerves, I walked up to Appletrees and found a gorgeous, stately guest house with a room looking out on a view like a painting. Catherine and her sweet doggy Polly greeted me and made me feel at home. When it was time to leave, I got nervous again because I couldn’t work out how to get to York for our next adventure. Catherine gave me taxi information, and other friendly guests encouraged me. We made it to York! Thank you, Catherine and family, for a stay we couldn’t have asked for more from. I still dream of returning to Appletrees and mention it to my husband now and then as the perfect getaway...

The beds were comfortable, the showers were good, and everything was very clean. Appletrees is an easy walk from town, places to eat, and the train station. Catherine was friendly and really helpful, and breakfast had lots to choose from, including the traditional English full breakfast and other options for a change.

We stayed at Appletrees Guest House for two nights in September, 2024, and really enjoyed it. Catherine and her family are lovely hosts, and the B&B is just as lovely. The rooms are beautiful, with ensuite baths and spectacular views of Derwentwater and the surrounding mountains. It’s a perfect spot within walking distance of the pedestrian town centre, and breakfast was delicious. Highly recommend!

The room was fresh, the shower was nice, and everything was clearly explained, with easy instructions. The mattress looked new and felt fresh. I had some trouble with gaps in the blanket's padding, though my girlfriend didn't, and it was only a small issue. Catherine was welcoming and accommodating, and was happy to meet my initial room requests. She gave me a room with a nice view as requested, and explained that if I wanted the beds together I could push them, though the bed design would leave a gap. She also shared lots of information about the area and beyond, with plenty of pamphlets for walks and other activities. The breakfast ordering sheet was confusing, even though Catherine explained how it worked. I heard other guests in the dining room say the same, but in the end it all worked out fine. For around 90£ per night, the room was an absolute steal. Catherine made the stay even better, and you can tell this place is a passion project they put their heart into.

The views from the rooms are splendid, and the location is excellent. The rooms are beautifully and thoughtfully decorated. Catherine and her team have put so much love and effort into the place, and their hospitality went beyond what we expected. If you're heading to the Lake District, this is definitely worth considering. Other hotels may seem appealing and overpriced, but I can't imagine anything serving you better.
