The Heights Hotel

We stayed as a family of three, including our eight-year-old, and found it lovely and quiet. It's an easy, short drive to Keswick and Seathwaite for Scafell Pike. The food was great and portions were generous, and the bar stayed open until 11pm with a good range of drinks. The owner and his son were friendly and helpful. At 7am on Sunday, before our seven-hour drive home, the owner even came out to wave us off. Recommended.

Barry, the superb proprietor, was always there when we needed him. Sorry we missed you before checking out, and thanks for a lovely stay. The rooms are a bit dated, but the welcome, cleanliness and location more than made up for it. Running a small hotel isn't easy.

The prices are really good, and it’s a handy place to stop after town or a long walk. People are up for a good natter, and dogs are welcome. I stayed at the Castlerigh Farm Campsite and came to this bar several nights. It’s a little gem, with friendly service and a lovely atmosphere. The place is a bit dated, but that’s part of its charm. The Loweswater Gold real ale was excellent and very well kept. If you’re after somewhere posh or a pricey gastro place, this probably won’t suit you. I’d happily recommend a visit.

The Chow Mein was delicious, with great flavours and spices, and a generous serving. It was just what I needed after a big day walking, and cost much less than I’d have spent in Keswick. I’d definitely recommend the Crag Bar to vegetarians and vegans looking for a nice meal out.
